WHY COLLEGE!!!

Why College? I chose to attend college to better myself and future. Upon my completion at Fairfield High Preparatory School I begin working at a CVS Warehouse in Bessemer,Al starting at 9.50 an hour. My intentions was to work there for the rest of my life. My grandfather lectured me everyday I got off that working at a warehouse was no place I wanted to spend the rest of my life and that I needed to be in someone college.Every time my grandfather talked to me about school everything he said went in one ear and out the other. Once my grandfather passed I begin thinking of what my life would be if I was to enroll in school and get a degree. After a few more weeks of working at CVS Warehouse I had a back spasm and was hospitalized. Once i was released I knew then that I didn't want to have back problems for the rest of my life so once registration opened I registered for classes and is now attending Jacksonville State University with a major of exercise science to become a physical therapist. So "Why College" Obtaining a college education will help me  develop the confidence in myself and grow as a human being. This will be a very important development for all future endeavors, and will provide me with the strength to set forth in the world and do well.

  1. Hey Darius. I really like your post! I'm glad you took what your grandfather was saying into consideration. I can relate to this because I didn't plan on going to college either. I had bigger and better dreams to skip college and rush into becoming a professional dancer. I also let the things people were telling me go in one ear and out the other. However, I'm glad I changed my mind and it's good that you did too!

  3. Darius, your post is so meaningful and powerful. Where you take a sad pasting of your grandfather and turn it into something so life changing; some people would just move on but you had real guts and took your life in your hands to further your education. My grandfather has always told me he regretted not going to college, but was thrilled that I wanted to go to school. I feel that going to school is a way for you to remember the wise man your grandfather was, while you prove to everyone else you want to be here not just because its whats expected but because you care so much about your future to go to college!

  4. It's good to hear that you made the decision to attend college. It may not be fun having classes and doing all this work but in the end it will pay off big time. A physical therapist will make a ton of more money than a warehouse worker. I'm sure your grandpa would be very proud.

  5. Wow, that was very interesting. Well written Darius. I'm glad your grandfather pushed you to go farther in life. He sounds like he was a good man and you are making him proud. Keep it up. I think the memory of him is what keeps you motivated and we all need motivation when it comes to college.
